New College Football Technology Already Experiencing Major Malfunctions

College football's in-helmet communication didn't go as planned in the Week Zero matchup between Georgia Tech and No. 10 Florida State, a 24-21 upset win by the Yellow Jackets.

According to FSU head coach Mike Norvell , the Seminoles were forced by the officials to turn off the newly-instituted technology in the second half because Georgia Tech's equipment malfunctioned and was unusable at the time.

It's unclear exactly how long the two teams were working without the in-helmet connection, which was ushered in ahead of the season for the first time in the sport's history. The communication is linked between the quarterback and offensive play caller. There is also a designated defensive player linked with the defensive play caller on the other side of the ball.

The NFL has long used a similar technology, but this is a new tool at the collegiate level and it seems like there are some kinks to be worked out.

The new rule was put in place as a response to Michigan's sign-stealing scandal, eliminating the need for signals all together. At least that was the plan, as we've learned the coach-to-player connection isn't completely reliable just yet.

College coaching staffs will have to be prepared if an issue like this rears its head in the future. That means maintaining a plan for signals incase the in-helmet technology malfunctions.
