The pre-season is almost here. Chilly walks in the rain, the crunch of dead leaves underfoot, pumpkin spice lattes (I don’t know, I think they're pretty good)—fall’s got a lot going for it.
For skiers, though, one part of the equation trumps the rest. As the mercury plummets, we gather our friends and head to the cinema to watch the latest ski movies from our favorite production companies. Here, we re-up on our depleted reserves of skiing stoke and schmooze with old ski season acquaintances we might’ve forgotten about during the warmer months.
In the digital age, many of us consume content—skiing or otherwise—alone, awash in the bluish glows of our computer screens. Sure, having a world of movies and shows at our fingertips is great, but before getting into our list, I have a plea: if a ski movie’s showing near you this fall, go in person .
Like buying boots, enjoying ski movies is much, much better with a little human connection on the side. Epic tricks and lines hit harder when the entire movie theater is shouting in excitement alongside you. Go see your people. Go watch skiing together.
Now, with that out of the way, let's detail the most exciting ski movies coming in 2024.
1. Beyond the Fantasy —Teton Gravity Research
Where can you watch it : Beyond the Fantasy is going on tour this fall. Click here for tour dates.
Teton Gravity Research’s latest offering, Beyond the Fantasy , is all about making dreams come true—that goes for its featured skiers and the audience members who’ll appreciate their talents. While shooting Beyond the Fantasy , Teton Gravity Research brought the cameras to legendary mountains in Alaska, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and Norway, among others. Their all-star cast came along for the ride, too, including the likes of Kai Jones, Maggie Voisin, and Janelle Yip.
2. Calm Beneath Castles —Matchstick Productions
Where can you watch it: Calm Beneath Castles is going on tour this fall. Click here for tour dates.
And now for the other ski filmmaking titan. Matchstick Productions has churned out top-notch ski movies for over two decades. While we haven’t seen Calm Beneath Castles yet, everything about this upcoming film looks bigger and better than Matchstick’s last offering. Stellar skiers? Check. Awe-inspiring locales? That too. A few standout riders include Sam Kuch, Colby Stevenson, and Michelle Parker.
3. Wasteland —Level 1
Where you can watch it: Wasteland is touring this fall alongside several other films for Level 1’s Freeski Film Tour. Click here for tour dates.
Level 1 is back on the road this fall with a headlining featurette flick: Wasteland . Promising a mix of backcountry shredding and street skiing, the film’s sure to deliver more of that Level 1 action we know and love. Plus, if you grab tickets to see Wasteland live at the Freeski Film Tour, you can watch a host of other films from talented folks like Keegan Kilbride, Svea Irving, and Sammy Carlson. It’s the combo meal of ski movie season.
4. Mountain in My Mind 3
Where you can watch it: Mountain in My Mind 3 is touring this fall. Click here for tour dates.
Mountain in My Mind 3 does things a little differently. It combines the usual exploits we’ve come to expect from the genre—flips, cliffs, and big lines—with difficult conversations about suicide, depression, survivors' guilt, and therapy. That mix makes Mountain in My Mind 3 more than just a ski movie: it’s also a conversation starter.
Drew Petersen just about knocked everyone’s socks off when he released Ups and Downs , a short ski movie that provided a raw and honest look at his battles with PTSD, bipolar disorder, brain injury rehabilitation, and suicidal thoughts. Like the Mountain in My Mind series, Ups and Downs helped open the door to more open discussions about mental health and mental illness within skiing. With Feel It All, which dropped this summer and chronicled Petersen’s journey to run 100 miles, the skier turned mental health advocate has worked his magic again.
6. Ash —Magma
Where you can watch it: Somewhere sometime this fall.
With Ash , we don’t have a lot to work off of. It’s from Magma, the ski and film crew composed of Hunter Hess, Alex Hall, and Owen Dahlberg, but we don’t know much more than that. Presumably, it's the successor to the trio’s MAGMA series, which, since its release, has become a cult favorite amongst skiing's core audience—and beyond. Regardless, based on who’s involved, Ash will be one to pay attention to. Stay tuned for more updates.
7. Spliff —Dylan Siggers and Liam Morgan
Where you can watch it: Somewhere sometime this fall.
As far as we can tell, despite the title, Spliff isn’t about smoking something that’s still federally illegal. Instead, the film’s name is an acronym that means: Spread Positive Loving Intimacy, for Friends. It’s a message I think we can all get behind. That Spliff’s trailer makes skiing look fun—and rowdy—only sweetens the deal.
