The fountain at Point State Park is turning 50 years old this week.

Who can miss it? Coming out the fort Pitt tunnel, or coming from the west end, there it is the iconic Point State Park fountain, which first started pumping on August 30, 1974.

On Wednesday, local officials like Visit Pittsburgh President and CEO Jerad Bachar celebrated this crown jewel of Pittsburgh.

“This fountain at Point State Park has been more than just a centerpiece for our city, it stands as a symbol of Pittsburgh’s beauty, our resilience and certainly our vitality,” said Bachar. “When you think of Pittsburgh, it’s hard not to picture this historic water feature.”

The Point State Park Fountain has overseen six Steelers Super Bowl titles, five Stanley Cup championship and the 1979 World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates.

The fountain cycles through 1.2 million gallons of water every hour.
