DIY Gifts For The Upcoming Holiday Seasons

Universal emergency DIY gifts are easy and quick to make. With the right words, the receiver will understand that it's the thought that counts and that you cared a lot to pick out this gift for them. The gifts might be even more special for them because handmade, homemade DIY gifts are often more personally meaningful than store-bought gifts that might have been bought in a rush. Here's some ideas for incorporating DIY gifts to your holiday celebrations.

    Holidays With Gift Exchanges

The big list of popular US holidays that DIY gifts could be used for includes Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother and Father's Day, Halloween, and Hanukkah, among many others. Birthdays aren't exactly a holiday, but they have the same tradition. DIY gifts are good choices for the holidays that focus on more personal gift-giving, such as Valentine's Day or Mother's and Father's Day.

If you're stressing over when you should start thinking about getting or making gifts, here's a helpful reminder so you won't panic the next time you need to buy or make a gift for someone. As quick and easy as some of these DIY gifts are, these kinds of gifts still require time for prep work, crafting, and making sure everything looks okay and you don't hurt yourself.

    Ideas for DIY Gifts

Quick! Grab some scissors, tape, glue, a sewing kit, clothes you don't need, random paper you also don't need, string, and whatever other crafting material you find along the way to make some of these great DIY gifts.

    Charms

In Japan they make these dolls, called Teru Teru Bozu, which serve as charms made to stop the rain and bring out the sun on rainy days. These dolls make the simplest of DIY gifts with good cultural representation. Grab some stuffing of whatever material, crumple it into a ball, cover it with a few layers of white cloth, tie the neck with string, and draw or stitch a smiley face on the head. You can give someone a little ghost friend for rainy days.

    Paper

Let's say you're a kid and only have paper, scissors, and glue or tape. That's fine; there are lots of DIY gifts kids can make that are taught in school, such as paper sculptures, origami, and paper dolls. There are videos on YouTube for making origami and on Pinterest or Google for making paper sculptures. For example, take some paper, fold one into a cone, cut the other paper to thinly roll into paper sticks, and cut the rest into curved obtuse triangles. Roll and glue the triangles around the tips of the sticks until they form flowers and put them in the cone for a makeshift bouquet! The tea-stained paper makes it better.

    Food

Another variation of DIY gifts you could have for someone is something from your kitchen. If you have any clean, untouched, vegetables that you have yet to cook with or have no idea what to do with, fermenting or preserving food has a lot of perks. In this day and age, who would say no to free food, especially ones that will be well preserved without the worry of it going bad? These types of gifts are give you an idea of what to do with that cabbage head you've had a hard time finishing and a stress-reliever for their recipients.

    Plushy/Stuffy/Pillow

This one is on a bit of a higher level for DIY gifts, but it feels very fulfilling to make. Get some fabric from your old clothes by taking the largest piece and cutting it so that it is wide open, and lay it down flat on the floor. If you don't have cotton, just get smaller pieces of fabric; ball them up into an ovular, flat pumpkin shape; and place it in the middle of the fabric.

Take a corner or a point, pull it over towards the middle, and pin it down, pulling the other points in, one fabric fold over the other, until it has curved folds all the way around. Here's the hard part: get a large button and put it over the middle where all the points of the folded fabric meet. Keep it all together as you hold it on its side, then begin stitching the button down, squishing it to push the needle out the bottom of the other side, and repeat until secure.

    Purpose of Gift Giving

The whole reason why gift-giving culture is a thing and why DIY gifts ended up becoming popular mostly depends on the country you're in. In America, gift-giving is a popular thing; in others, it might not be. Sometimes it's simply to give someone a gift that they may need, just to be a helpful person, or to communicate in your love language of gift-giving. It could be because they gave you something amazing and you want to do the same in return out of emotional debt or gratitude; either way, gift-giving has long been a way of community and expression.

Sometimes making DIY gifts can give one a lot of pressure to think about what to make and especially to give, but it can also be rewarding. It feels worth it for the person you care about, and that person who cares about you will see great value in any personalized DIY gifts you make for them.

    Wrapping Up

The above gift ideas are just examples of what you can make using the items you have around you rather than going to the store. Though it might sound like a joke, remember that it's the thought that matters; people who care about you should and will appreciate the effort you put in to make the present for them.
