Toby Keith found success when his debut single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” hit the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. That song kicked off a career that would result in Keith being a country music superstar. More importantly, he was a father of three. So, he had to balance raising a family with his music career. In a recent interview, his daughter Krystal Keith said she had a normal childhood. Later in life, she would lie about her father’s occupation telling curious people that he had a regular blue-collar job.

The lie wasn’t far from the truth. Keith worked on oil rigs before he found success as a country star. He supported his wife and kids on a working-class salary. Later, as his success grew, he gradually transitioned his family into a better life. However, he was down-to-earth and never wanted to live a glamorous life.

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Keith’s daughter reflected on her childhood. During the conversation, she revealed that she lied to people about his occupation.

Krystal Keith Told People Toby Keith Was a Plumber

“I think I thought everybody’s dad had a job like my dad,” Krystal Keith said, reflecting on her childhood. “He might as well have been a plumber,” she added. “In fact, that’s what I told people he did. Later in life, when people would find out who he was, and then they would come ask me a question, I knew they knew the answer. They’d be like, ‘What does your dad do for a living?’ I’d be like, ‘He’s a plumber.’”

She wouldn’t even tell people that her dad’s name was Toby Keith. Instead, she would tell them his name was Mark. “It was always Mark,” she told the publication. If that didn’t stop the questions, she would give them another famous Oklahoman’s name.

“My second favorite thing to say was Garth Brooks, because there were already, like, they knew he was a singer,” she revealed. “They were expecting Toby Keith, and I’d be like, ‘My dad’s Garth Brooks!’”

“We had an incredibly normal childhood,” she recalled. “So it wasn’t like our lives changed drastically. It was just, the things we were able to afford became a little bit different. My mom wasn’t stressing about, you know, where the light bill was getting paid. I mean, that was something we never knew about from the time we lived in a trailer,” Keith explained.

She went on to say that her dad didn’t change when he became a star. “It was really just the people around us changed the way they treated us and the way they talked to us about him changed.”
