ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Workers at the P&G Plant on East Grand Avenue were told to leave after several man hole covers were blown off on the campus.

According to the St. Louis City Fire Department, an unknown liquid had settled on a lower level of the sewer system underneath P&G. The department believe the liquid ignited, causing an explosion that blew off the manhole covers.

The situation led to employees at the plant being told to leave the campus, without being given a reason.

The Metropolitan Sewer District says they will begin their investigation into the explosion Friday.

P&G makes detergent there. Lots of it. The surfactant ingredients are combustible. My prediction...one of their big batches of detergent or even a raw material tank went bad and they had to flush it...but concentration was too much. Fumes reached flammable state in the sewer and somehow a flame somewhere ignited it.
