I'd say mutual investment is key. My Dad told me in my very early twenties that a man who was my age then would NOT be a good choice. I didn't accept or understand it. My Dad said I should be looking for a guy in his 30s then. To me that was ancient. I soon discovered my Dad was trying to save me heartache and pain. Dad was correct my then bf who was 21 professed undying love for me in love letters he wrote very quickly after we met. He came on very strong. We had white hot chemistry. I won't say he didn't try. His Dad even said give it a whirl. I had a toddler from a brief previous marriage and he didn't want to be an instant father. He tried but he just wasn't ready. We cried hysterically as did I when we broke up for the final time at age 26.
