Suspect leads police chase, jumps from overpass in Stark County: Deputies

STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) – A Carroll County man was taken to the hospital on Thursday after investigators say he led law enforcement on a police pursuit through multiple counties, ending with the man allegedly jumping off an overpass in Stark County.

It started around 8:50 a.m., when Carroll County dispatchers received a call from a woman who said she was assaulted by the suspect, a 36-year-old Malvern man.

While a sheriff’s deputy was taking down the report, investigators say the suspect drove past him at a high rate of speed on Alliance Road. The deputy was unable to catch him, officials said.

Around 11:05 a.m., with help from police officers, the suspect was spotted in the village of Minerva. Officers tried to stop the man on E. Line Street.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including a Canton Regional SWAT Team and K-9 officers, were called to help with the stop, but after 54 minutes of negotiation attempts, the sheriff’s office said the suspect fled from police again, driving west on State Route 30.

Investigators say the pursuit continued into multiple Stark County jurisdictions.

About an hour later, according to the sheriff’s office, the suspect got out of the vehicle and jumped off the State Route 44 overpass onto State Route 62.

The suspect was caught and taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital for face and head injuries. Investigators say he was later flown to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, where his condition is unknown at this time.
