    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Highlights of the fifth day at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Friday (times GMT):

    0636 ZVEREV BEATS ETCHEVERRY

    Fourth seed Alexander Zeverev fought back after losing the first set to beat Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry 5-7 7-5 6-1 6-3 in the third round. Former finalist Zverev will face Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round.

    0548 SABALENKA REACHES FOURTH ROUND

    Australian Open champion and second seed Aryna Sabalenka survived a first-set scare to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 2-6 6-1 6-2 to set up a fourth-round clash with Elise Mertens, who beat 14th seed Madison Keys earlier.

    0349 DJOKOVIC KNOCKED OUT BY POPYRIN

    Australian 28th seed Alexei Popyrin knocked out defending champion and second seed Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 in the third round. The 25-year-old faces American 20th seed Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.

    0239 MERTENS KNOCKS OUT KEYS

    Former quarter-finalist Elise Mertens bounced back from a first-set loss to beat American 14th seed and former finalist Madison Keys 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4 in the third round.

    0150 RUUD BEATS SHANG

    Former finalist and eighth seed Casper Ruud fought back from two sets down to beat Shang Juncheng 6-7(1) 3-6 6-0 6-3 6-1 in the third round. The Norwegian faces American eighth seed Taylor Fritz in the fourth round.

    0123 NAKASHIMA KNOCKS OUT MUSETTI

    Brandon Nakashima came from 4-0 down in the fourth set to claim a shocking 6-2 3-6 6-3 7-6(4) win over Italian 18th seed Lorenzo Musetti and reach the fourth round for the first time.

    The American, who also upset 15th seed Holger Rune in the first round, will face the winner of the later clash between Tomas Etcheverry and Alexander Zverev.

    2252 TIAFOE TRIUMPHS IN ALL-AMERICAN BATTLE

    Frances Tiafoe, the 20th seed, came out on top in a five-set thriller against fellow-American, 13th seed Ben Shelton, winning 4-6 7-5 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3.

    2215 FRITZ EASES PAST COMESANA

    American 12th seed Taylor Fritz comfortably saw off Argentina's Franciso Comesana with a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win to advance to the fourth round.

    2150 DIMITROV DOWNS GRIEKSPOOR

    Bulgarian ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov carved out a comfortable 6-3 6-3 6-1 win over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor to set up a fourth round showdown with Russian Andrey Rublev.

    2140 RUBLEV INTO FOURTH ROUND

    Sixth seed Rublev beat Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-3 7-5 6-4.

    1955 NAVARRO THROUGH TO PLAY GAUFF

    American 13th seed Emma Navarro enjoyed a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over Ukrainie's 19th seed Marta Kostyuk, and advances to meet defending champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round.

    1915 THREE-TIME FINALIST AZARENKA BOWS OUT

    Victoria Azarenka, finalist in 2012, 2013 and 2020, is out of the tournament after the Belarusian lost 6-4 3-6 6-1 to China's Wang Yafan.

    Wafan will play Spain's Paula Badosa in the fourth round.

    1815 GAUFF SURVIVES SVITOLINA SCARE

    Defending champion Coco Gauff faced her toughest test yet at this year's final major but safely reached the fourth round with a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory over Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.

    1742 BADOSA OVERCOMES RUSE

    Spanish 26th seed Paula Badosa came from a set down to win 4-6 6-1 7-6(8) against Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse and advances to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career.

    1632 ZHENG ROUTS NIEMEIER

    Seventh seed Zheng Qinwen of China beat German Jule Niemeier 6-2 6-1 to reach the fourth round.

    "Finally I have won a match in two sets, I was focused since the beginning," the 2024 Olympic champion and Australian Open finalist said after the match.

    "It has not been easy for me here right after the Olympic Games. I don't know if they will put me in Granstand again, I hope not. I lost against Jule in midnight in 2022 US Open third round. I am glad I am the winner today and I don't have to cry."
