A Las Vegas family is mourning the loss of their six cats after a their Tesla caught fire and ravaged their home.

Aimee Yem and her family were forced to flee their home in Southwest Las Vegas on Sunday after a Tesla ignited in the garage. “I woke up and all of a sudden I’m running for my life, you know, and then I was … I remember that time I was praying, praying for the fire truck to come because we still have so many pets inside,” she told NBC affiliate News 3 Las Vegas .

She was able to escape the flames safely but unfortunately her and fellow homeowner Andrew Baek could not save their beloved pets. “They’re all siblings, all from the same mom,” Yem said.

She said in the rush to flee she tried to grab at a few cats but the pets panicked when the fire alarm blared and hid under the bed instead. Now Yem and Baek are working on getting answers as to what started the blaze.

“We didn’t have anything in the garage,” Yem said. “So, it was for us right now, it’s a puzzle. But we know that seeing from the fire, it was Tesla that would just keep firing.” The pair returned to the home after the fire to see what they could salvage and were devastated to see there was not much left.

It was especially tough for Baek, who works as an interior designer, to see his furniture and décor ruined. “It’s heartbreaking. You know, working so hard for all that and one day is perfectly normal and the next is up in flames, literally. You know, you see it in movies and all that but never thought that I could just really happen to us,” Baek said.

The pair said they are not sure if they could ever return to their destroyed home. “It’s the what ifs that kill, you know,” Baek said.

“For now, I’m just grateful we’re able to do what we can. I’m grateful that my girls are out at least, you know. That’s the most I can ask for.” Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
