Scottie Scheffler dealt brutal burn by fellow PGA Tour star in live Tour Championship broadcast

Scottie Scheffler was dealt a brutal burn from his fellow PGA Tour star Sam Burns, who described the world No. 1 as 'terrible' during the second round of the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Scheffler is storming his way to a first FedEx Cup crown in Atlanta having started the event with a two-shot lead thanks to the staggered strokes format reflecting the season-long standings. From there he has only opened up the gap, sitting four shots clear of second-place Collin Morikawa at 21-under-par.

Not everything went to plan for the world No. 1 in round two though, who fired an errant tee shot into a fairway bunker off the 13th tee box, before missing the green with his approach from the sand.

Fellow competitor Burns had made his way into the Golf Channel commentary booth after completing his round and was less than impressed with Scheffler's play. With the ball looking to fly from one bunker to another for the tournament leader, Burns was heard commenting: "This guy is terrible!"

Of course, the dig was in good humor, with Burns and Scheffler sharing a close-knit friendship for some time on the PGA Tour. So much so that Ryder Cup star Burns was on babysitting duty for Scheffler's newborn baby son Bennett. With Scheffler on the tee at the FedEx St Jude Championship earlier this month, Burns was seen lifting baby Bennett high in the sky as his dad teed off.

The pair are often inseparable on the PGA Tour, with practice rounds and accommodation sharing a common occurrence between the pair. A small wager during practice is often on the cards between the PGA Tour duo heading into a tournament alongside the likes of Justin Thomas and Max Homa.

Scheffler revealed that he quickly learned that his pal Burns was one man you want by your said in a fourball clash. “Usually always the best ball match play just because it's a practice round," he claimed recently. "It's more just match play. I played -- Sam and I played a lot of practice rounds together.

"but he would smoke me at the beginning of the week, just would abuse me. So I started taking him as my partner, and we've been a lot better since I took him as my partner. We'll usually play two-on-two matches or if it's just Sam and me going out, we'll play a little one-on-one match.”

And whilst there is often something on the line between the two sides, Scheffler believes practicing alongside Burns and co is the best way to prepare for an event. "This week, Sam and I played Justin and Max on Monday, and it's just fun," he added. It's a good time with your buddies. The beginning of the weeks are typically more relaxed.”
