PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on Aug. 30 the winners of its 2024 Safety Message Contest, with the public casting more than 3,200 votes to select the top messages encouraging safe driving habits.

The two winning traffic safety messages are:

    • DRIVE WITH CARE, LIFE HAS NO SPARE
    • WATCH YOUR SPEED, NOT YOUR SOCIAL FEED

The winners, Dori Brock of Casa Grande and David Dixon of Ahwatukee, were invited to ADOT’s Traffic Operations Center, where they had the opportunity to input their messages into the Dynamic Message Sign system.

According to ADOT, these messages were chosen from more than 2,500 initial submissions. The entries were narrowed down to 10 finalists, and the public was invited to vote on their favorites.

The messages will be displayed on overhead message boards during the Labor Day weekend.

Brock's message, "Drive with care, life has no spare," was inspired by a saying her mother frequently used. Brock shared her hope that this message would resonate with drivers, reminding them of the importance of cautious driving.

“When the message goes live, I’m hoping my mom will be looking down from heaven and be thankful that her saying will be seen by so very many people. Also, that it will be saving lives on our busy freeways,” Brock said.

Dixon’s message, "Watch your speed, not your social feed," was crafted with input from his wife. Dixon hopes that the message will not only bring a smile to drivers but also prompt them to prioritize safety on the roads.

“Hopefully, the message gives drivers a chuckle, but more importantly, makes drivers focus on safe driving habits that get us all home safe,” Dixon said.

ADOT's ongoing traffic safety campaign emphasizes the critical impact of driver behavior on road safety.

The agency cites national crash data indicating that over 90% of vehicle crashes are the result of driver decisions, including driving impaired, distracted, aggressively, or at unsafe speeds, according to ADOT.
