Felt like ‘recess’ out there as Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers throws no-look touchdown pass in win

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has filmed all the TV commercials, posed for clothing lines and promoted everything from video games, soda and even Gold’s Gym. His bank account is pumped up something fierce.

Finally on Saturday, Ewers got to do what he truly enjoys — playing actual football and throwing no-look touchdown passes.

“Man, it’s the best,” Ewers said after Saturday’s 52-0 win over Colorado State. “It’s like being in elementary school whenever you’re in English class and that bell rings and it’s time for recess. I mean, it’s just like that. There’s not a better feeling in the world than being able to play out there.”

Ewers looked totally comfortable running the Longhorns’ offense. He found 10 different receivers in the first half as Texas ran up a 31-0 lead. It was some of the most efficient football the program has played in years.

One particular play stood out that should make NFL scouts drool. Late in the second quarter, Texas faced first-and-10 from the Colorado State 11-yard line. Ewers faked a handoff and, while looking to his right, zipped a no-look pass over the middle to transfer receiver Matthew Golden, who raced in for the touchdown.

Most Texas fans went home thinking and talking about Arch Manning’s impressive flip to Silas Bolden for a five-yard touchdown in the second half. But Ewers’ throw through traffic was every bit as Patrick Mahomes-like as it gets.

Ewers completed 20 of 27 passes for 260 yards with three touchdowns and one harmless interception when the ball was tipped out of his hand.

“That was awesome. That was cool little deal I did,” Ewers said. “Man, I just felt, felt everybody flowing. So I looked to the flat and threw a little stick route. And, you know, sometimes it works out for you. Man, you know, I guess it just worked out for me.”

The linebacker didn’t even see it. “Went right by him,” Ewers said.

Asked if he takes things from NFL players, Ewers said, “Totally, for sure. Those guys are the best of the best at the highest level at the sport that we all play. There’s definitely things that and players that I like to watch to try to get how they do certain things.”

To hear Ewers tell it, the season opener couldn’t have gone any better. The Longhorns were able to get Golden and the other two transfers Isaiah Bond and Silas Bolden into the mix. It helped take the pressure off the running backs, but coach Steve Sarkisian noted that “we did run between the tackles” on the opening touchdown drive.

“I think it felt great out there with those guys,” Ewers said. “I think we were all pretty much on the same page, and they were doing a good job of communicating what they were feeling and seeing out there. And I was communicating with them where I wanted them to be in certain situations.

“You know, it’s cool,” he added. “It’s cool whenever it goes both ways like that. We are both able to listen to each other and apply feedback.”
