During training camp, Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward suffered his fifth known concussion and missed the entire preseason. He is currently in the concussion protocol and his status for Week 1 is still in question.

Ward said that he never once considered retirement following the concussion.

“I’ve done a lot of research and met with concussion specialists,” Ward said. “They gave me the knowledge I needed, so I’m not too concerned about it. I know people worry about the number and everything, but I can’t let that affect me.

“I’m still looking forward to getting back out there. I’m glad to be playing again”

Ward explained that he met with a neurologist and will be using one of the new position specific helmets to help against future concussions. With the Browns taking on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, Ward says he can’t let guys like receiver CeeDee Lamb off the hook.

“I can’t let the receivers off that easy in this league,” Ward said. “I’m looking forward to giving them a hard time.”

He had the best year of his professional career last season, so its understandable how hard it is to quit the game he loves. At some point, the risk will outweigh the reward, but for now, Ward plans to be on the field next week.
