Mindfulness is one of the buzz words in the fitness industry. What does it mean? Mindfulness means living in the present moment. Essentially, it means being (intentionally) more aware and awake of each moment and being fully engaged in what is happening in one's surroundings — with acceptance and without judgment.

What are the benefits of living in the now?

Helps manage stress.Increases focus.May lead to better sleep.Helps reduce anxiety.Feeling grounded.Chance to observe thoughts and quieten them down.

Does mindfulness mean sitting for hours? It does not have to be — it can be a few moments of really concentrating on your breath, taking a long slow deep breath and slowly exhaling.

Here at the Y, we offer many group fitness classes that allow you to slow down and be mindful in your movement.

You will be challenged to slow your breathing down and connect your breathing to your body.

If the mind-body formats do not appeal to you, then all of our fitness classes incorporate elements of mindfulness. You need to be in the present moment to learn new dance choreography, learn how to master a burpee in the Tabata and circuit classes, learn a new move in Bodypump to name but a few — but you truly have to present to listen to your body, to make the choice that is right for your body at that moment in time. Why? This helps you make the choice that will help you with injury prevention. Our staff will offer a variety of options to set you up for success.

As we grow older it is important that we become more mindful in all aspects of our life — September is Fall Prevention Month. Be sure to check out our schedule for details of fall prevention and balance classes. Need to work on something more specific? Feel free to set up a consultation with one of our personal trainers.

Wishing you a mindful and stress-free autumn.
