    Columbia High School community mourns loss of student

    COLUMBIA, IL (KMOX) - Illinois State Police reports around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Waterloo Police saw a car driving at a high rate of speed on Illinois Route 3. Shortly after, the car was found on Hanover Road, involved in a one car wreck.

    **Official Statement from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department**

    Monroe County — It is with deep regret that we confirm a fatal vehicle accident has occurred in Monroe County. This tragic incident has profoundly affected multiple families, as well as our dedicated first responders.

    On behalf of Sheriff Neal Rohlfing, we respectfully request that the public allows time for the grieving process and respects the privacy of those involved.

    We are aware of various rumors circulating online, and we urge everyone to refrain from spreading unverified information.

    At this time, we will not be releasing further details regarding the incident. We ask that you continue to support and honor the families impacted by this tragedy. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

    Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

    Columbia CUSD4 Superintendent Christopher sent an email to KMOX saying:

    There were four Columbia high school students involved in a car accident. One past due to the injuries, two remain in the hospital, and one is at home with his family. This is a tragic event and the surrounding school districts have responded accordingly. We will be open with additional social workers and councilors from neighboring schools to assist us through the situation.

    Columbia High School Soccer posted on their Facebook:

    " Our hearts are broken, we are mourning the loss of a brother and teammate, please pray for the families. our soccer family, and school school community."

    Superintendent Grode told KMOX the district will not release the deceased student's name until law enforcement does.

    Out of respect for the family and school KMOX is not naming the student.
