TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 3-year-old boy was found unresponsive in a pond in Chester County Monday night, authorities said.

Police were called to Wilson Farm Park on Lee Road, just off Route 252 in Tredyffrin Township, shortly before 7 p.m. for reports of a missing child.

The boy was under the supervision of a nanny when he went missing, investigators said.

Within minutes, responding officers found the boy in the pond about 100 yards from a playground. He was unresponsive. Officers tried to resuscitate him and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Tredyffrin Township Police Capt. Tyler Moyer said they quickly got ahold of the boy’s parents.

“The parents went to the hospital. They both responded pretty quickly, so I think they were in the general area,” he said.

Moyer said officers were visibly shaken.

“Everybody involved has been affected by it pretty profoundly at this point,” he said. “Anytime you have to deal with something like this, it changes you. It’s something that sticks with you for the rest of your career.”

Police have not said whether they suspect any foul play at this time. They also have not released an official cause of death.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family right now,” Moyer added. “It’s a very tragic incident. Our investigation into this is still ongoing, very preliminary at this time.”

Despite being close to a playground and only fenced on some sides, the pond is not meant for public use. Nearby signs say swimming, boating, ice skating and fishing are not allowed.
