At a recent press conference, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles made an interesting blunder.

Bowles was talking about the Buccaneers opening up the 2024 NFL season at home against the Washington Commanders when he called the Commanders by their pre-2020 nickname, the Washington Redskins.

He said: “I think if you find yourself just facing a rookie quarterback, the other 10 guys are going to kill you. We’re facing the Redskins, we’re not facing Jayden Daniels.”

The Washington Redskins were in existence from 1937-2019.  Technically, the Redskins existed longer than that because they were the Boston Redskins from 1933-1936.

In 2020, the team name became the Washington Football Team which stuck until 2021.  Since the 2022 season, the team has been called the Washington Commanders.

Old habits die hard.  Bowles played the majority of his NFL career for the Washington Redskins from 1986-1990 and 1992-1993 so it is not shocking that he still refers to them by their old name.
