Maura Healey’s name being bandied about as Harris’s possible AG

Healey faced a question about her potential as Kamala Harris's pick on CBS’s "Face the Nation."

Gov. Maura Healey‘s name is being tossed around as a possible candidate to succeed Merrick Garland as U.S. attorney general if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected this November.

On CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday morning, Healey, who served as Massachusetts state attorney general for nearly eight years before taking office as governor, faced a question about the speculation.

“I love being governor of this state,” Healey said, after being asked if she would be interested in the job. “I love what we’ve been able to do, free community college, better access to health care, making sure that we do things to move forward economically.”

Healey continued, calling herself a “pro-growth Democrat” and saying she is focused on doing everything in her power to get Harris elected.

“It will be good not just for Massachusetts, it will be good for America,” she said.

Speaking with reporters on Monday following the Greater Boston Labor Council’s Labor Day breakfast, Healey gave a clearer answer, saying she is “not interested in any other job,” according to CommonWealth Beacon.

“You know, I laugh at people with their speculation about stuff,” she said. “I want to be really clear: I am not interested in any job other than being governor. And more importantly we’ve got a race to win, OK? So I’m not going to engage in further discussions about this. This is about winning a critically important election.”

Other possible contenders for the role include North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, according to POLITICO.

As state attorney general, The Boston Globe reported that Healey sued the Trump administration nearly 100 times, winning 77% of her cases.

Healey, a high-profile campaign surrogate, was the first Democratic governor to publicly urge Joe Biden to reconsider his presidential bid, and she was quick to endorse Harris after Biden dropped out.

Healey also spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, praising Harris’s work as a prosecutor.

“We face a stark choice in this election. A felon and con man or a dedicated prosecutor,” she said. “Kamala Harris fights for all Americans. She stays on offense, and she wins.”
