'Mom named me after her favorite fruit – it's tacky and embarrassing'

While most parents turn to the Big Book of Names when naming their children , others seek inspiration elsewhere. That's exactly what one mom decided to do when naming her daughter - sharing how she sought inspiration from her favorite fruit .

Taking to Reddit , the daughter said: "My name is Apple. I only hate my name when I’m around strangers because they stare (for example: doctor's office) or when I introduce myself because people always think I’m lying. In high school, everyone started calling me Apps and I loved it."

Justifying the moniker after complaining about it to her mom, the mom claims it's a popular name in her home country, Laos.

However, the daughter added: "I think it becomes strange since I was born in the US so it got translated. The only other person I know named Apple is Gwyneth Paltrow ’s daughter."

Commenting on her name, one user said: "My name is Tiger, just imagine my troubles. Be glad that you're just an Apple, stay that way." Another user joked: "They're probably wondering why on earth your name isn't keeping the doctors away."

A third user said: "I love the name Apple! Apps are perfect too. My cousin's step-sister has the same name and probably got all the looks too growing up but I would definitely name a kid that."

Sharing their own unusual name, one more user added: "I used to absolutely hate my name, and was insistent that I was going to change it as soon as I turned 18. My name is Rave. I love it now and am so glad I didn’t change it."

Another user said: "I hated my first name, very boring and I had some weird stuff happen in my teens that I felt very disconnected from and being called that name made it worse. I came up with a nickname when I was about 15 and used it everywhere I could until my 18th birthday and then I marched down to the registry place and changed it officially, now everyone I meet has no clue that 'Ren' isn't the name I was born with. The name is short, quirky, and fairly unisex compared to my birth name which is longer and very girly and lame."
