PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department today released details of a comprehensive master plan process to shape the priorities and goals of the park system.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, the plan will guide the development and management of Phoenix’s green spaces for the next decade and beyond, according to city officials.

“Our parks and recreation facilities touch every person in our community, providing spaces for connection, recreation, and tranquility,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said.

“Launching our master plan is a crucial step in ensuring that these amenities remain active, cared for, and accessible for future generations. We are committed to creating a plan and a vision that reflects the needs and hopes of all Phoenix residents."

The City of Phoenix emphasized the importance of community engagement in this process. Public feedback will be gathered through various channels, including surveys, public meetings, and interactive workshops, according to city officials.

"Our goal is not only to create a beautiful park system but also one that meets the needs and desires of our diverse community,” Parks and Recreation Director Cynthia Aguilar said. “Meaningful feedback from residents is crucial in achieving this goal."

A significant part of the master plan involves assessing 25 parks across the city for water conservation strategies, according to the “Power of Parks” website.

These strategies include evaluating turf based on functionality and maintenance needs, analyzing the Calsense system for optimal irrigation control, and providing guidelines for the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

Other key areas of focus for the master plan include public safety through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and ensuring that recreational programs and services are delivered equitably across the city, according to the website.
