    Those grooves in the rim are called “knurling,” and we still do it today. Theirs were done individually, by hand. It was an ancient technique for preventing people from shaving a tiny bit of precious metal from every coin the handled; when a coin got too small vendors would refuse them, and the coin holder would be stuck with it, like a counterfeit bill today. But they could, and did, melt such coins down to recoup their loss, which meant Rome had to mint more to keep the money supply up. Complicated currency problems have been around a LONG time.
