The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to be set at quarterback as they enter the 2024 season opener against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Baker Mayfield returns as the starter with a brand new $100 million contract, and Kyle Trask enters his fourth season as the team's backup.

But as the favorites to win the NFC South , the rival Atlanta Falcons have added some depth under center.

Atlanta announced on Tuesday that they added quarterback Nathan Peterman to the practice squad after releasing offensive lineman Julién Davenport to make room. The Falcons will meet the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday with veteran Kirk Cousins at quarterback, with rookie Michael Penix Jr. backing him up.

Peterman was cut by the Las Vegas Raiders at the end of the preseason after being cut by the New Orleans Saints early in training camp. He went 12-for-19 for 108 yards with one touchdown during the preseason.

The 30-year-old was a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2017, with whom he spent his first two seasons in the NFL. He played his next two seasons with the Raiders in 2020 and 2021 before joining the Chicago Bears for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Peterman has appeared in 15 games in his pro career with five starts and a 1-4 record in those starts with four touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
