The controversy between WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes and Nancy Lieberman took an interesting turn on Tuesday.

Lieberman recently appeared on an episode with sports analyst Stephen A. Smith on the Stephen A. Smith Show, where she was critical of her friend for the criticism Swoopes had on Indiana Fever rookie star Caitlin Clark.

“I called [Sheryl Swoopes] as a friend and I said “you can have your own opinion about anybody but you do have to get the stats right.” “She got upset with me… and so our relationship is pretty much not happening at this point," Lieberman said.

Swoopes caught wind of this and responded to Lieberman's comments on a space via X (formerly Twitter), claiming that her supposed friend never called her to talk to her about Clark.

"Nancy Lieberman decided she was going to be upset that I said it was going to be an adjustment period for Caitlyn Angel, all the rookies, but in particular, Caitlyn and that I didn't think she would come in the league and dominate right away. It's my opinion," Swoopes said.

"So she got upset that I said that. So she decided she was going to go to Twitter, which is what people do. She was going to go to Twitter and try to call me out. And I don't have it, but it's somewhere out there in the universe where she actually posted, 'oh, why can't we just let them be great? Let me introduce you to Caitlin Clark.'

"And so, she had to go on and put all the stuff about what Caitlin had done, which is great. So don't say you call me to talk about that when you didn't; You posted that on Twitter, and then I responded to you. I text you, and said, 'Nancy. if you have something to say, call me. Since we're supposed to be, quote, friends, Nancy.'"

Caitlin Clark is in the midst of a historic rookie season, breaking WNBA records left and right while making history of her own. She is averaging 18.7 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game on 42.4% shooting from the field and 34.1% from three-point land.

While Swoopes and Lieberman sort out their drama with one another, Clark and the Fever will focus on their upcoming matchup with the Los Angeles Sparks on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. ET.
