PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A student at Upper Darby High School was found with a gun and synthetic drugs, which prompted a lock-in on Tuesday, according to the school district.

A teacher alerted school administrators and security about a student who was not acting like himself and who the teacher believed might be intoxicated, according to a letter from Superintendent Daniel McGarry.

Around noon, the student was taken to the office, where he was searched. Investigators say they found a gun and drugs on the student, prompting a lock-in — common areas were cleared, students and staff were told to stay in their classrooms and offices, and classes continued as usual.

Bernhardt says police were notified and they removed the student and the items from the school, and the lock-in was lifted.

In a letter to Upper Darby parents, guardians and community members, McGarry said nobody was hurt, and all safety procedures were followed.

The school is offering pupil service professionals for students who were troubled by the incident and want to talk to someone about it.

According to police, the student will be charged for having a gun on school property.
