The Minnesota Golden Gophers football program reportedly lost out on a four-star wide receiver recruit to its border rival Iowa this past weekend.

Terrence Smith, of Aurora, Ill., was offered scholarships from Big Ten schools: Minnesota, Iowa and Purdue. The 6-foot-3 2025 wideout reportedly committed to the Hawkeyes on Sunday, according to 247Sports .

Smith officially visited the University of Minnesota on June 15.

Last year at West Aurora High School, Smith snagged 59 catches for 906 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. His sophomore season saw him haul in 36 passes for 629 yards and six scores.

Smith ranks 350th nationally in the 2025 recruiting class by 247Sports and 50th in the nation at his position. He's also ranked as the 8th-best recruit in the state of Illinois.

The timing of Smith's commitment comes after Iowa dismantled Illinois State at home on Saturday 40-0 and the Gophers lost a sloppy game against North Carolina at home, 19-17, at Huntington Bank Stadium.

    Minnesota's 2025 recruiting class is ranked 49th overall by 247Sports .

It's highlighted by quarterback Jackson Kollock, wide receiver Bradley Martino, cornerback Naiim Parrish and defensive lineman Jayquan Stubbs. None of the 23 recruits who have committed to the program next year are higher than a three-star recruit, per 247Sports.

The Gophers football team (0-1) will face Rhode Island (1-0) at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday at 11 a.m.
