Hayward cyclists compete in Cable Conquest races

Mount Telemark Village trails were very busy over the Aug. 30-Sept. 1 weekend, as nearly 900 high school and middle school bicycle racers from across the state competed in the Cable Conquest, the first event of the fall season sponsored by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League, a chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).

The racers started and finished at the American Birkebeiner start line off Telemark Road.

The Hayward Mountain Bike Team had more than a dozen cyclists compete in this event and took third place overall. Two of the athletes took first place in their races: Sam Berquist in JV Division 2 boys; and Elsa Maki in JV 2 girls.

The Hayward riders racing in this event were:

Sixth grade boys: Gus Berquist, fifth, 21:35; Eli Yoder, 19th, 22:52; Pearson Rodriguez-Wisdom, 42nd, 26:37.

Freshman Division 1 boys: Justin Olney 12th, 40:02.
