Six Injured in Elmwood Place Crash Involving a School Bus & SUV

A school bus and two other vehicles were involved in a crash around Elmwood Place on Tuesday, according to police.

Five people in a Ford Expedition suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police stated that they sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The bus driver also suffered minor injuries and was transported for medical care.

“We are relieved the injuries were not severe and are committed to a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident,” said Elmwood Police Chief Randall Newsom.

The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. on September 3rd at the intersections of Township Avenue and Sycamore Street.

Police reported that the three children riding in the SUV weren’t wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. They were among five people in the vehicle, including two adults, a 7-year-old, and two 2-year-olds, who also weren’t in car seats.

The Elmwood Place Police Department stated that the SUV caused the crash, which crumpled under the side of the school bus. EPD also reported on social media that only the driver was on the school bus during the crash. Thankfully, the bus wasn’t carrying any students.

A black four-door car was also involved. Investigators estimated that the SUV might have been traveling up to 50 mph in a 25 mph zone on Township Avenue.

Elmwood Place police have not released the identities of those involved but confirmed that the SUV driver would face charges.
