While the battles on the field each Saturday is important, the off-field progress made matters as well. Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has delivered top recruiting classes for years, and part of that is going into enemy territory to land high-end talent. The Buckeyes' expansion into Florida, Texas, and California has been key for the program.

2026 edge rusher Shaun Scott, out of Santa Ana, California, is one of the hot names on the Buckeyes' radar. The USC Trojans target is a solid 4-star prospect with offers from all the top programs around the country. But right now, it looks like a race between Ohio State, Tennessee Volunteers, and the Trojans.

Scott was at Ohio State's Week 1 beatdown of Akron, and the latest intel bodes well for the Buckeyes.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has made plans to revisit Columbus later this fall, and is targeting one of Ohio State's premier games. The Mater Dei product will be on campus against Michigan to take in The Game, per Scott via 247Sports .

A big reason why Scott is considering the Buckeyes is his relationship with linebackers coach James Laurinaitis.

“My relationship with Coach Laurinaitis is good for sure. I visited my freshman year in March, and we have been in contact ever since.” But another relationship will help the Buckeyes: “Coach Larry Johnson also, when I visited he sat me down, and we had a great meeting.” As well as Coach [Josh] Chorba, the outside linebackers coach. Scott said, “[Chorba] has been in contact almost every other day.

[Laurinaitis] not only is coaching for Ohio State, but he played for Ohio State. So it would be a blessing to be a part of his linebacker core. He had many accomplishments and was an Ohio State legend.”

Scott certainly knows his Ohio State history and respects someone who Buckeye fans revere. We'll be tracking Scott's recruitment process until he signs on the dotted line.
