The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning parents against purchasing baby products from deal sites like Temu and Shein. While widely popular for their vast selection and bargain prices, the CPSC warns the products may not be safe. Commissioners Peter A. Feldman and Douglas Dziak issued a joint letter on September 3 asking CPSC staff to do a deep dive into Temu and Shein to ensure overseas suppliers meet the obligations established by the Consumer Product Safety Act.

“This examination will inform the Commission on the legal status of these platforms. To the extent a platform falls outside the Commission’s reach, policymakers must understand where gaps exist and how best to address them. Likewise, the Commission must better understand what enforcement challenges exist with respect to foreign third-party sellers. Where agency compliance staff discover safety violations, we expect CPSC to initiate enforcement actions,” the letter reads.

Temu And Shein Are Major Concerns

The letter states that the media has reported deadly baby and toddler products are widely available on the sites, which pose a danger to young children. Thousands of Chinese vendors have joined these sites to get their products into the hands of American consumers. The CPSC wants to know if they’re safe.

“We seek to better understand these firms, particularly their focus on low-value direct-to-consumer – sometimes called de minimis – shipments and the enforcement challenges when firms with little or no U.S. presence distribute consumer products through these platforms,” per the release.

The letter explains the group’s understanding of the desire to have access to affordable products, but there must be a way to ensure they are safe for families to use.

“This form of commerce can benefit consumers and sellers in many ways, but CPSC must make clear its expectations regarding these platforms’ responsibilities to ensure safety. We expect this review by Commission staff will inform what further steps are needed to protect American consumers.”
