Fike senior Zoe Mitchell, warming up before a match at home Aug. 21, improved to 9-0 with a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles in the Golden Demons’ 9-0 sweep of Southern Wayne at home Wednesday, Sept. 4. Paul Durham | Times

Visiting Southern Wayne may have spent more time getting to and from Fike High than the Saints did on the refurbished tennis courts Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 4.

The Golden Demons dropped two games in singles in an otherwise perfect 9-0 win to improve to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in 3-A Quad County Conference matches. That makes 46 straight QCC regular-season victories for Fike, the only champion the third-year league has known. The Saints exited 0-4 on both counts.

Senior Zoe Mitchell raised her singles mark to 9-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 conquest of Southern Wayne’s Ameya Randolph at No. 3 while senior Kaden Biamby and junior Emory Skinner each stand 8-0.

The Demons will visit county rival Hunt on Monday, Sept. 9.

    Ladybirds win Big East ‘debut’

WAKE FOREST — Southern Nash took first-place honors in a match involving all 2-A/3-A Big East Conference girls golf teams Wednesday at Brevofield Golf Links.

With Audrey Jones and Bryleigh Colbert leading the way, the Ladybirds shot a 159 in the match against all six other Big East schools. The outing, however, won’t count toward the conference standings.

Jones and Colbert, a senior playing her first match for the Ladybirds, each carded a 52 that tied them for second place. Makayla Weeks, Alaina Bailey and Sarah Ewers each turned in scores of 55 on the nine-hole layout.

The next match for the Ladybirds will be a Big East affair Monday afternoon, Sept. 9, at Peachtree Hills Country Club near Spring Hope.
