Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died from her injuries after being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend.

The 33-year-old had been in an intensive care unit since Sunday after suffering burns to more than 80 per cent of her body. The horrific attack occurred in Kenya shortly after her return from the 2024 Paris Olympics .

Her ex-boyfriend Dickson Ndiema allegedly poured petrol from a can on Cheptegei and set her ablaze after a disagreement. Neighbours helped to put out the fire, according to reports in Kenya, with both Cheptegei and Ndieman being rushed to hospital with extensive injuries.

Dr Owen Menach, who oversaw Cheptegei's treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, issued a statement shortly after her passing . Menach said: "It is sad that we lost the patient early this morning after all organs failed at about 5am while we were doing our best to save her life."

It was suggested that the pair had been arguing over the land that Cheptegei's house is built upon. The 33-year-old purchased the land located close to the Ugandan border and built her home.

A statement from the Ugandan Athletics Federation on social media read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.

"As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace."

Cheptegei had been training in Kenya following her return from the 2024 Paris Olympics. She represented Uganda in the marathon at her first games but failed to earn a medal, finishing 44th.

Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said: “The couple was heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her. The suspect was also caught by the fire and sustained serious burns."

Police also confirmed the discovery of a five-litre jerry can, a bag and a scorched phone at the scene after the incident.

In the marathon, Netherlands star Sifan Hassan claimed gold, with Tigst Assefa securing silver for Ethiopia. Hellen Obiri claimed the bronze medal.

Uganda claimed two medals throughout the Games in the French capital. Joshua Cheptegei won gold in the 10,000m race - the second Olympic gold of his career. Peruth Chemutai claimed silver in the 3000m steeplechase just days later.

The attack on Cheptegi is just the latest shocking incident involving a Ugandan long distance runner. Olympic runner and steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead in 2023 with stab wounds.

He had represented Uganda at three Olympic games and was found dead in Kenya. A statement from World Athletics at the time read: "World Athletics is shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Benjamin Kiplagat. We send our deepest condolences to his friends, family, teammates and fellow athletes. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time."
