Max Johnson Out For Season With Broken Leg

It’s ok Tar Heel nation, you can cry. University of North Carolina Quarterback Max Johnson was carted off the field in the third quarter of the team’s battle in Minneapolis against the Golden Gophers. This came after University of Minnesota cornerback Justin Walley landed on Johnson’s right leg while attempting to sack him. The good news for Johnson was that he could get the ball off and avoid the sack, the bad news was that his right leg was broken, thus ending his season.

    Cursed With the Injury Bug

Johnson cannot catch a break when it comes to injuries. Before transferring to UNC this off-season , he was the quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies. In the 2022 season, he started 3 games, putting up 517 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Then he broke a bone in his throwing hand against Mississippi State, which ended his season right then and there. In the 2023 season, he was a backup in College Station, which prompted his transfer to UNC. After winning the QB1 spot this off-season, it seemed like Johnson was finally going to get another chance to take some meaningful snaps this year. That is until, well, you read the title.

This may have been the last gasp of air for Max Johnson’s football career. To have your season ended in your first game on a new team is devastating (just ask Aaron Rodgers). On a brighter note, backup Conner Harrell came into the game and helped the Tar Heels get the 19-17 victory over the Gophers. He only had 2 completions for 34 yards, but with UMN kicker Dragan Kesich (2023 Big Ten kicker of the year) shanking a 47-yard attempt, it was enough to get the win.

2024 College Football Hot Takes: ACC

Max Johnson still has 2 years of eligibility left, but with another season-ending injury, I’m less than optimistic about his future. Following in his father Brad Johnson ’s footsteps and carving out a successful NCAA and NFL football career seems to be a fading dream.
