Updated: Man, 83, Dies After He Is Hit by Golf Cart

UPDATE: An 83-year-old man died three days after he was struck by a Town of Huntington golf cart at Centerport Beach. Suffolk County police said the matter appeared to be non-criminal. A source said the man fell and hit his head on a curb. The Town of Huntington issued this statement Thursday afternoon:

The Town of Huntington is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Danny Demopoulos, an active member of our senior community at the Flanagan Center and the Senior Beach House. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and all those who were touched by his life.  The Town will continue to offer support to his family and those who are affected by this loss.

In an effort to dispel misinformation that has been circulated, the Town of Huntington would like to offer the following statement:

There was a very unfortunate accident at a Town event last week that involved one of our beloved senior citizens and a young man driving a golf cart.  Mr. Demopoulos was hit by the golf cart, was injured, and taken to the hospital.  Sadly, a few days later, Danny Demopoulos passed away.

The young man driving the golf cart was not a Town employee.  He was a young man who participated in a Suffolk County Department of Labor program for the economically and educationally disadvantaged to learn a skill to gain long term employment.

The Suffolk County Police Department is investigating the incident, which they deemed non-criminal.  The Town of Huntington is cooperating fully with SCPD and is also conducting an internal investigation of its own.

As with any investigation, the intent is to gather the facts prior to disseminating information and to protect the privacy of those involved.  The Town of Huntington takes this responsibility very seriously and will continue to follow this protocol when it is warranted.
