Hunter Biden has withdrawn his “not guilty” plea in a bid to resolve his federal tax evasion case in California with a plea deal, his lawyers revealed on Thursday.

According to CNN , the potential agreement, known as an Alford plea, would allow Biden to avoid admitting guilt while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to convict him. In exchange, he would accept a sentence determined by District Judge Mark Scarsi .

The move comes as Biden, son of President Joe Biden , faces nine tax charges, including three felonies. Prosecutors allege that Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in federal taxes, instead spending on “luxury cars, extravagant hotels, and sex workers.”

Despite repaying around $2 million in back taxes and penalties after getting sober, his defense took a hit when the judge ruled jurors would not hear about his belated payment or his history of addiction.

The case is Biden’s second major legal battle this year, following his June conviction on federal gun charges. Despite the mounting legal pressure, President Joe Biden has maintained that he “will not pardon” his son.

The court is now waiting for Judge Scarsi’s approval to finalize the deal.
