3 of the Most Historic Moments of Freddie Mercury’s Iconic Career

Freddie Mercury accomplished massive feats in his career. From cementing himself as a historic vocalist to becoming a beacon of light in the AIDS crisis, it seems Mercury could do it all. Given the man’s versatility, it is hard to pinpoint his most iconic moments. However, here is a list that hopefully sheds light on Mercury’s most miraculous milestones.

1. Freddie Mercury’s Vocal Warmup at Live Aid

This one comes as no surprise. The video of Mercury both warming up the crowd and his voice has been in circulation since it happened in 1985. Not only is it all over the internet, but it is also arguably the most important scene in his 2018 biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. By showing off his vocal range to more than 70,000 fans, Mercury not only proves his generational talent but also shows his deep-seated connection to the public.

In addition to Mercury’s outstanding vocal warmup, the performance is known to be the best live show of Queen’s career. They without a doubt stole the show, as Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof overtly said, “Queen were absolutely the best band of the day.”

2. The Courageous Public Statement

In 1991 Mercury publicly acknowledged his ongoing battle with AIDS. With the help of Queen’s manager, Jim Beach, Mercury released the following statement—”Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS.” Mercury tragically died one day later on November 24 in Kensington, England.

The magnitude of this statement almost goes beyond words. Not only did Mercury do the bravest thing he possibly could, but he also aided the millions of people who AIDS had affected in the thick of the epidemic. This moment proved that Mercury was more than just a musician, as he was also a sociopolitical icon of his generation.

3. Leaving Almost Everything to Mary Austin

The story between Mercury and his former lover, Mary Austin, is both heart-warming and tragic, as the two dated for many years and intended to get married one day. However, once Mercury came to terms with his sexuality the two split, and marriage was off the table. Regardless of Mercury’s personal epiphany, the two stayed best friends up until Mercury died in 1991.

That being so, when Mercury passed he left nearly everything to Austin. According to the Economic Times, Austin received 50% of his future earnings, numerous properties, and is the boss of 18.75% of Queen’s earnings. This isn’t necessarily a grandiose moment of Mercury’s career, but it does show that his heart held no bounds.
