Cowboys QB Dak Prescott changes tone, has us thinking a contract extension is closer than ever

Last week, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott talked to reporters about his ongoing contract negotiations with the team and showed some fight in him, suggesting that if there was no contract in place before Week 1, it would say a lot about "how people feel. "

Fast forward to Thursday and the Cowboys quarterback admitted he didn't feel the same way days removed from the team's season opener.

“I know both sides are working.” Prescott told reporters on Thursday, via The Athletic's Jon Machota when asked what he'd feel if a new contract isn’t done before the Cowboys' season opener. “People change their feelings daily. I can’t say I have the same feelings that I had last week.”

The last bit is certainly significant, as it's a direct change in tone compared to last week when he made it seem like he'd take it as a slight (rightfully so, by the way) if the Cowboys didn't take care of his contract situation before the team moved on to football. It's worth noting that Prescott did say last week he doesn't "need" the extension done prior to kickoff. Unless his feelings just magically changed, Prescott's comments imply something happened since he last talked to the media.

Interestingly enough, Prescott also dived into how much it means to him to chase a Super Bowl while wearing the Cowboys uniform, via All City DLLS ' Joe Hoyt: “That’s what motivates me, honestly, being here is to be the QB that does it. I don’t think winning in any other place would be the same as winning it here.”

Dak has never shied away from talking about how much it means to him to be playing in Dallas but this is the same player who not so long ago was openly discussing how he shouldn't fear the possibility of playing elsewhere. Of course, Prescott was responding to a question, but his shift in responses has fans thinking some progress might've been made recently in negotiations that have dragged on for far too long.

At one point, Prescott even joked that a new contract would help him build an indoor facility to go with the famous turf field at his house, which many call the "Dak Yard."

Ultimately, this is nothing but more of what we've done all offseason long: Speculating off of quotes from the parties involved. What is true though, is that the season kicks off on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns and if the Cowboys truly want Prescott around for the long run, their best shot is to get him locked up before gametime comes around. Otherwise, that 2025 free agency temptation might be too big to ignore for the second-team All-Pro quarterback.

I am waiting to hear when a reporter will ask.... If you're truly wanting to win a Super Bowl how is it that getting such a salary will help keep other "key" pieces needed in a team sport to get to a Super Bowl?
