CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) — A Macomb County man is behind bars after allegedly fatally shooting his neighbor’s dog.

Andrae Maurice Jones of Clinton Township was arraigned Tuesday in connection with the death of his neighbor’s dog, Buddy.

The 43-year-old is facing multiple charges, including third-degree killing/torturing an animal, Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido announced Thursday.

The alleged shooting happened on Thursday, Aug. 15. Jones allegedly shot and killed Buddy that day when the dog came close to his property line, according to the prosecutor’s office.

No other circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting were released, including whether the neighbors had any troubles with each other prior to the shooting.

“Under Michigan law, intentionally killing a dog is a four-year felony. The consequences of the defendant's actions extend beyond just legal repercussions. The family is now grieving the loss of a beloved family member. We will ensure the defendant faces the consequences of his alleged actions,” Lucido said, per a press release.

In addition to killing/torturing an animal, Jones was charged with felony firearm, careless discharge of a firearm and malicious destruction of property. If convicted, he could spend up to four years in prison.

Clinton Twp. District Court Magistrate Ryan Zemke set bond at $20,000 cash/surety, 10%. If released, Jones will be ordered to have no contact with the dog’s owners and he will not be allowed to possess any firearms or ammunition.

His next court hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 16.
