My grandparents lived in Picher from 1930 till 1998. I loved going to Picher to visit them, in the 80’s. Climbing and sliding down the chat piles, could just roam the town and everyone knew everyone…they would stop you and say who do you belong too, I would tell them my grandparents names and they would have a story to tell me. You could carry your BB guns around and no one cared, it was a typical small town. Then in the 90’s it was gloom and doom, lead exposure for years, the water that always had the sulfur smell and normally ran a light burnt orange out of the faucet, was not healthy..lol..everyone in Picher knew this and had water purifiers on faucets or bought gallons of water. They had to go to laundromat in Miami, Ok to wash whites, because of water. Sinkholes all over town, it was not a safe place, but the town was so poor no one could move. The federal superfund came in and undercut the value of their homes, could not buy a home anywhere for what was being given.
