(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department confirms that a deputy chief and a police officer have been relieved of their official powers, as they face vandalism charges stemming from an incident that happened while they were on duty.

CBS News Chicago reporter Charlie De Mar reports that 53-year-old Deputy Chief Roberto Nieves and 26-year-old Officer Jacob Gies surrendered to their colleagues Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say they were caught on security camera slashing a car's tires during the Puerto Rican parade in Humboldt Park back in June.

Nieves became a deputy chief in 2020. The department says it's busted him down to his former rank of captain.
