Department of Planning to hold Free Sustainable Growth webinar Sept 12

ANNAPOLIS — Cecil County officials and others interested in the future of their rural communities are invited to a pair of free webinars through the Maryland Department of Planning.

“Growing Recreational Economies For Rural Communities” is a free webinar being offered Sept. 12 beginning at 1 p.m.

This webinar will also serves to introduce rural leadership to the Recreational Economies for Rural Communities program of the U.S. EPA. Attendees will learn how the program will work and will hear two case studies from Brunswick, Md. and Hartwell, Ga.

Applications for this program are now being accepted. Funds can be used for planning assistance in rural towns and small communities to improve or add outdoor recreation or to revitalize Main Streets.

Then, on Sept. 17, the Maryland Department of Planning and Smart Growth will look at solar farms, or agrovoltaics. This is also a free webinar that begins at 1 p.m.

Among the topics to be discussed will be developing local codes and ordinances and the government’s role in the future development of these green energy operations. There will also be a discussion on what has been learned so far in dealing with public expectations and the realities of such projects.
