Severe Weather Threat Looms Over Southeast Michigan

    2024-09-06

Thunderstorms Expected as Cold Front Approaches

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:06 AM EDT on September 5, 2024.

Potential for Thunderstorms Today and Tonight

Residents of southeast Michigan should be on alert as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook due to potential thunderstorms expected later today and tonight. According to the NWS report, these storms will occur ahead of an incoming cold front moving through the area.

While these thunderstorms are not anticipated to reach severe levels, it is important for residents to stay informed and be prepared for sudden weather changes, especially in outdoor settings. The areas most likely to experience these conditions include Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee, and Monroe counties.

Extended Weather Outlook: Cold Front Continues Through Friday

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue into Friday, as the cold front progresses through southeast Michigan. There is a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day; however, these too are not expected to become severe.

The primary weather concerns will be localized heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Despite the storms' expected lack of severity, residents should remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to the elements during periods of active weather.

    Spotter Information Statement

Currently, the NWS has indicated that spotter activation will not be needed for today and tonight. This suggests that while thunderstorms are expected, the risk remains manageable without the need for additional volunteer monitoring.
