The Memphis Grizzlies have had a quiet offseason, with minimal roster changes. GM Zach Kleiman and his staff have put their faith in Ja Morant's and other core players' return to health as the key to reclaiming their spot among the Western Conference's elite. By mostly running back last year's team, the Grizzlies hope better injury luck will lead to better results.

Unfortunately, the injury bug has already struck, with young forward GG Jackson sidelined several months after foot surgery. Amid this setback, optimism remains high in Memphis, but the front office would be wise to explore ways to improve Taylor Jenkins' rotation.

In a recent piece, Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes suggested an intriguing trade idea that could bolster the Grizzlies' frontcourt—bringing in former All-Defensive Second Team Robert Williams III, while shipping fan-favorite Brandon Clarke to the Portland Trail Blazers along with two second-round draft picks.

Why Williams III makes sense for Memphis

One significant move the Grizzlies did make was drafting Purdue center Zach Edey with the ninth overall pick. Edey fills a major need in Memphis' center rotation, which was thin after several departures and injury concerns.

Early indications are that Edey may be the opening night starter, but depending on a rookie to deliver for 82 games and in the playoffs might be wishful thinking.

That's why pursuing Robert Williams III makes sense for Memphis. Williams III made a name for himself as an elite defender during his time with the Boston Celtics, earning second-team All-Defensive honors in 2022.

While injuries have plagued the 26-year-old center, his impact when healthy is undeniable. On Memphis, he would give coach Taylor Jenkins' squad a more seasoned presence in the middle, a lob threat for Morant, and a defensive anchor to pair alongside Jaren Jackson Jr.

    Maximizing rim protection

With Edey still adjusting to the NBA, Williams could be the experienced big man the Grizzlies need to stabilize their frontcourt.

Pairing an explosive guard like Morant with a center who excels at setting screens and finishing lobs could unlock new dimensions for Memphis' offense.

Defensively, Williams' ability to protect the rim would complement Jackson Jr.'s versatility. Having these two long-limbed, athletic, smart giants roam around in search of block shots will ensure the Grizzlies' paint area is unwelcoming to all opponents.

Though Williams has his own injury concerns, the reward could be worth the risk.
