A kind and thoughtful dog dad built a custom elevator for his senior Labrador, and it's equal parts cool and sweet.

On September 1, 2024, TikTok user Benny n the Crew (@bnnynthecrew) shared a video of a kind Dog dad who will do anything to improve the life of his senior dog. Take a look!

In a video shared on Instagram, we meet a dad and his senior Labrador, who has some mobility issues. But they tackle it together.

"My step-dad made an elevator for our elderly dog," the video text reads. In the clip, we see the elevator that Dad made for the sweet Labrador, and it looks perfect.

They have the lift right off their porch to make sure the older dog doesn't have to jump down or use the steps to get off porch. Instead, he climbs into a platform that has a door so the dog is securely inside, and it even has a little roof to keep the dog safe when it rains or when the sun is too hot.

The lift is operated from the outside with a button secured to the top. The stepdad and mom show how it's used, with the senior dog going down off the porch and back up again.

"Dogs are a blessing," the video's caption reads. And in the comment section, people share their thoughts on the lift and the kindness in having this adaptive equipment available for their senior dog.

    One wrote, "So very cool!"

Another shared, "This is so cute! That doggo sure is loved!"

Someone else added, "The coolest thing I’ve ever seen."

    One shared, "This is beautiful!"

Important Tips for Parents With a Senior Dog

According to Small Door Veterinary , senior dogs need some extra care and love as they get older. "As a [pet parent], it’s important to be mindful of all the ways you can help to maximize your dog’s quality of life during their golden years – especially those you can start while your pup is still young," the experts explain.

A few important tips to keep in mind for your senior dog that you may not need to consider when they're younger is that they should have regular visits to the veterinarian.

"Regular vet visits and lab testing often allow you to catch health issues before they become clinically obvious, meaning they’re easier (and less expensive) to treat, offering a better prognosis for your dog," Small Door Veterinary shares. They recommend a wellness check every six months or so, more if your dog is showing any signs of illness or concerns.

Also, just as this family has done for their senior Labrador, it's important to check your home and make sure their environment is safe and comfortable for them.

"Seniors, particularly those with arthritis, may find it difficult or painful to climb stairs," the experts write. "You may need to move their sleeping area to one that is reachable without climbing stairs or consider installing ramps for them to navigate steps more easily. If your dog cuddles up with you on the couch, they may benefit from a ramp leading to the couch, and smaller dogs may need to be picked up."

They also suggest covering slippery surfaces, raising food and water bowls, and providing orthopedic bedding.
