On his prediction podcast this week Joel Klatt foresees a turnaround for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks in their Saturday 7:00 P.M. Pacific matchup against Boise State in Autzen Stadium.

He was frank in reviewing a clunker of a performance in their opener versus Idaho.

"Oregon barely got away from FCS Idaho last week. I mean BARELY got away," Klatt said.

"Oregon narrowly escaped what would have been the biggest upset in college football history, even more so than App State Michigan back from the early 2000s [2007]"

"They will inevitably play better. Here is where I am going to pound the table and say I believe in Dan Lanning."

"You know what those practices must have been like in Eugene, Oregon? Do you know what that film session must have been like in Eugene, Oregon? If I was Dan Lanning I would have walked in the team room, slammed the door, even though they're probably soft closed because Phil paid for them."

"Dillon had to throw 50 times to beat Idaho? What are we doing? I would have gone off. And inevitably you know that he did, because there's an old adage in coaching, you treat winners like losers and losers like winners because guys who lose need confidence and guys who win need humility."

"There was no doubt that Oregon needed a huge dose of humility after last week's win against Idaho, namely the group that needed it was the offensive line. We thought that offensive line was going to be something and guess what? They weren't anything in Week One."

Against the Vandals, the offensive had 5 of the team's 8 penalties, he noted. The Ducks averaged 2.9 yards a carry, and gave up three sacks after surrendering five all last year.

Defensively the key has to be slowing down the Broncos Heisman candidate at running back, Ashton Jeanty (pronounced Jinty).

Klatt read a mid-week quote from Lanning: “I think it’s the best running back I’ve seen since I’ve since I’ve been here. You know, he’s certainly an NFL guy. He doesn’t go down on first contact ever. He’s one of the best arm guys that we’ve gone against. You know, he runs really, really physical. And then the next guy they brought in (goes) for 100 yards too. So really powerful rushing attack.”

In logging a prediction, Klatt was emphatic.

He told his audience, "They're favored by 18 and a half. I think Oregon comes out, they're highly motivated, they were treated like losers the entire week. I think they will play exceptional football on Saturday and I actually think they run Boise out of here. I like 42-17 Oregon Ducks at home."
