The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is celebrating the birth of a Sumatran tiger cub, born on August 23 to first-time mother Jillian at the Tull Family Tiger Trail habitat. This birth is a major milestone for the zoo’s conservation efforts as Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with only 400 to 600 left in the wild.

"We are thrilled at the birth of this very special tiger cub," said Lisa Peterson, senior vice president of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "This birth furthers the genetic diversity of the Sumatran tiger population, which is essential for the species' survival."

The cub’s birth is part of the AZA Sumatran Tiger Species Survival Plan, which ensures the health and sustainability of endangered species. Zoo visitors can expect to see the new cub and learn more about tiger conservation, including ways to help protect their natural habitats from threats like deforestation and poaching.
