“It’s a tragic day, four days into the school year,” Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said.

On Friday after 12 pm, Grant was shot by another 16-year-old student in a Joppatowne High School bathroom.

The shooter opened fire and then ran away from the school.

Over 100 officials swarmed the scene and evacuated the school as they searched for the shooter.

The victim was airlifted to a nearby hospital , where he later died.

The suspect was later found without a weapon, and police arrested him.

Sheriff Gahler said it was his first day at the school.

School officials confirmed the incident stemmed from a fight that broke out on the school’s grounds.

They responded to a possible active shooting incident, but “thankfully that was not the case,” the sheriff said.

    QUICK RESPONSE

The reported fight prompted a heavy response from the sheriff’s department.

Emergency calls immediately after the shooting left parents fearing for their children’s safety as over 100 cops and first responders descended on Joppatowne High School outside Baltimore.

Within 15 minutes, more than 100 officers were on the scene, with dozens of police cars lining the high school parking lot, even landing a police helicopter on the football field.

The fight was taking place in a boy’s bathroom within the school when the gunshot went off, prompting panic and commotion on campus.

Grant was airlifted to a nearby trauma center where he remains in critical condition.

One person, a 16-year-old student who police believe was the shooter, was taken into custody within minutes of their arrival, according to the sheriff’s office.

The alleged shooter fled to a house off-campus after the fight where he tried to hide, but officers caught up to him and arrested him after they got a tip.

Due to his age, police are not allowed to interview the alleged shooter about the incident.

The state’s Childhood Interrogation Protection Act, passed in 2022, allows officers to still conduct witness interviews, and speak to community members about a crime.

But only after a minor speaks to an attorney and is informed of their rights by one, can they be interrogated by police.

However, the state’s attorney believes there is no real need to interview him as there is sufficient evidence to move forward with the case against the teen.

Police announced at the press conference that the state’s attorney plans to press charges, but did not hit at what they would be.

As of now, there is no longer an “active situation,” according to the police.

“There was a fight on campus to known parties,” the district said.

“A weapon was brought onto campus and used in the incident,” the district said in an alert to parents.

    EARLY CONFUSION

At first, parents were in the dark as to what had unfolded at the school, with officials only referring to the shooting as an “incident.”

“The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is currently working an incident at Joppatowne High School,” the sheriff’s office posted on X at the time of the shooting.

Firefighters and EMS responded to the scene as well, according to the department’s social media .

Parents responded to the sheriff’s office’s post on X with fears of an active shooting.

However, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office told The U.S. Sun that this was an “isolated incident and not an active shooter situation.”

Police advised people to stay away from the area and urged parents to pick up their children at the nearby Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.

A line reportedly the length of over two football fields was formed at the church with children waiting to be picked up after the incident, according to WBAL radio .

This shooting comes just two days after the horrific massacre at Apalachee High School in Georgia where four students lost their lives and another nine were injured.
