The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to kick off their regular season on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8. Coming off a winless preseason, the Steelers aim to make an early statement against the Falcons.

Here are a few key figures to watch as Pittsburgh looks to start the season on a high note.

Arthur Smith's Debut as Offensive Coordinator

Newly appointed offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will face a unique challenge in his first game for the Steelers as he returns to Atlanta, where he served as the head coach for the past three seasons. Smith compiled a 21-30 record with the Falcons before joining Pittsburgh, bringing a revamped approach to the Steelers' offense. While his preseason play-calling was notably conservative, many believe Smith held back his true game plan. Steelers fans are eager to see if Smith's offense can deliver the explosive plays that have been missing in recent years.

Despite his departure from Atlanta, Smith remains focused on the task at hand.

"You've always got history somewhere," Smith remarked. "But your mindset's gotta be on our guys and whatever they can do to win the game." With a pair of quarterbacks capable of dual-threat production, Smith's first game will be a litmus test for his offensive philosophy in Pittsburgh.

    Russell Wilson's Uncertain Status

The spotlight will also be on veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who joined the Steelers this offseason with aspirations of leading the team to a Super Bowl. However, Wilson's preseason was marred by limited snaps and a calf injury that caused him to leave practice earlier this week. Concerns over his readiness for Week 1 have only intensified following comments from former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel, who warned that Wilson's mobility could be compromised if he plays with the injury.

“Calf injury for Russell Wilson. Not good at all,” Daniel said. “He will not be able to move around. That is Russell Wilson’s game.” The Steelers may need to turn to their contingency plan sooner than expected.

Justin Fields as a Potential Starter

In the event Wilson is sidelined, recently acquired quarterback Justin Fields is expected to step in. Fields, who came to Pittsburgh as part of an offseason trade, is well-prepared to seize the moment. With his dynamic playstyle, Fields could provide the spark the Steelers need to challenge Atlanta's defense. A strong performance from Fields could create a quarterback controversy, potentially sidelining Wilson for an extended period.

This matchup could set the tone for the Steelers' season as they look to rebound from a lackluster preseason and prove they are ready to compete.
