New Regulations: High Voltage Safety Measures & AED Accessibility

    2024-09-06

New regulations will keep Washington workers farther away from high voltage systems and closer to medical aid, the state's Department of Labor & Industries reports.

Per House Bill 1542 from state Rep. Dan Bronoske, D-Lakewood, employers who operate and maintain high voltage systems (of 601 volts or over) must keep automated external defibrillator (AEDs) onsite when two or more employees are working near high voltage lines and equipment.

The 2023 law takes effect Jan. 1, 2025, and L&I is now intent on adding additional language to clarify minimum approachable distances in high voltage work and what “close proximity” means, according to memorandum.

L&I officials have also proposed references tying AED access to first aid kits, the department reports. Those references also rope in employers who perform line clearance tree trimming activities, according to L&I.

These rule amendments, according to the department, are meant to ensure employers and employees understand what measures are required when an employee requires CPR or an AED.

Written objections to the proposed changes are due by Nov. 4, 2024, 5p.m., L&I reports further.
