Chelsea owners 'exploring sale options' after Todd Boehly relationship breakdown

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are reportedly contemplating their next move , just over two years after they took over the club. According to a recent Bloomberg report , there's been a fallout between Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali, leading to speculation about a potential buyout.

The disagreement stems from various issues, including the club's recruitment policy and underwhelming performances on the field. While the future of the Blues remains uncertain, it's been revealed that Clearlake Capital has no plans to sell but is open to increasing its stake.

Boehly, who also owns the Los Angeles Dodgers as part of the Guggenheim Baseball Management consortium, initially served as sporting director when they first bought the club. However, his involvement has gradually diminished over the past two years as Chelsea focused on revamping its recruitment staff.

In the last six months, Boehly has stepped back from daily management duties, with Eghbali now considered the most influential figure at Stamford Bridge.

The Boehly-Clearlake consortium purchased Chelsea from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in a £4.25 billion deal. Clearlake holds more than 60 percent of the club, while Boehly, US businessman Mark Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss own the remainder.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took the reins at Chelsea, they've splashed over £1bn on new talent, yet the team's performance has left much to be desired.

Despite a strong finish that saw the Blues secure sixth place in the Premier League, the club chose to part ways with head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Before Pochettino's tenure, Chelsea had dismissed Thomas Tuchel in September 2022, handing the reins to Graham Potter. The ex-Brighton boss's stint was short-lived, however, as he was shown the door less than six months later, paving the way for Stamford Bridge icon Frank Lampard to take over until season's end.

In an April interview with Forbes , Boehly addressed the discontent among fans regarding the club's transfer policy and lackluster results. He stated: "We just need to let the process develop and give them the time to go from being unbelievable individual players with great skills to fold into a team."

He acknowledged the double-edged sword of passionate support, adding: "The good news is people care so much. And the bad news is people care so much. That leads to times when they're frustrated with the team and the owners. I get that, but we just have to continue to stay the course."
